NEW YORK (AP) A billboard in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village neighborhood says: “I stand by the people of New York, and the people are always right.”
The billboard, which was installed by a gay activist group called the New York City Lesbian & Gay Community Center, was erected in front of a nondescript storefront in a park in Greenwich Village that serves as the home of a gay bar.
A sign on the sidewalk reads: “Don’t forget to vote.
It’s important to us.”
A spokesman for the gay center said it would not comment on the billboard.
The billboard has drawn criticism from some of the LGBT community, who say it stigmatizes gay people and encourages discrimination.
New York City Councilman James Oddo, who represents the neighborhood where the billboard is located, says he will consider adding language that says: “”It’s about protecting all of our people and all of the diversity that we are.
