The billboard, which was erected on Sunday in Schitt’s Creek, N.J., drew ire after it featured a photo of a smiling, smiling Muslim man in a turban and the words “Islam is dead” and the phrase “Islam sucks”.
The billboard’s creator, a Lebanese-American, told The Washington Post that he had initially intended to place the billboard outside of his business and “in a way that is not offensive to the community.”
However, he decided to place it outside his house.
“We had no intention of putting a billboard outside my house,” he told The Post.
“When I saw the billboard I immediately thought about how the billboard is in violation of the law.
And then I thought about what I would say to the people in my community if they were offended by my billboard.””
I thought about the fact that it is illegal to discriminate based on religion.
And then I thought about what I would say to the people in my community if they were offended by my billboard.”
The billboard also featured a picture of a man who appears to be holding a weapon.
The advertisement was taken offline on Sunday, but a second one was installed later in the day in front of the local courthouse, The Post reported.
The signatories of the billboard campaign said that they believed the billboard was a “bigoted” message that was being taken out of context and that they were outraged by the billboard’s placement.
“This billboard has absolutely no place in a town like Schittsdale,” one signatory told the newspaper.
“The billboard is an anti-Semite and a racist.”
According to The Post, several other signs, which read “Keep Schittss Creek Free of Islamic Terrorism,” were also removed from billboards around the country in recent days.
